Large Excess of Heavy Nitrogen in Both Hydrogen Cyanide and Cyanogen from Comet 17p/holmes
نویسنده
چکیده
From millimeter and optical observations of the Jupiter-family comet 17P/Holmes performed soon after its huge outburst of October 24, 2007, we derive 14N/15N=139±26 in HCN, and 14N/15N=165±40 in CN, establishing that HCN has the same non-terrestrial isotopic composition as CN. The same conclusion is obtained for the long-period comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) after a reanalysis of previously published measurements. These results are compatible with HCN being the prime parent of CN in cometary atmospheres. The 15N excess relative to the Earth atmospheric value indicates that N-bearing volatiles in the solar nebula underwent important N isotopic fractionation at some stage of Solar System formation. HCN molecules never isotopically equilibrated with the main nitrogen reservoir in the solar nebula before being incorporated in Oort-cloud and Kuiper-belt comets. The 12C/13C ratios in HCN and CN are measured to be consistent with the terrestrial value. Subject headings: comets: general — comets: individual (17P/Holmes) — radio lines : solar system

2. Relevance to Public Health 2.1 Background and Environmental Exposures to Cyanide in the United States
Cyanides, a diverse family of compounds containing the highly reactive cyanide anion (CN), are produced from both anthropogenic and natural sources. The cyanide compounds most commonly found in the environment include sodium cyanide, potassium cyanide, and gaseous hydrogen cyanide, the latter being the main form present in air. The use of the term ‘cyanide’ in this section refers to the cyanide...

Mixtures of molecular nitrogen and methane have been identified in numerous outer Solar Systemices including the icy surfaces of Pluto and Triton. We have simulated the interaction of ionizing radiation in the Solar System by carrying out a radiolysis experiment on a methane – molecular nitrogen ice mixture with energetic electrons. We have identified the hydrogen cyanide molecule as the most p...

We present high angular resolution Submillimeter Array observations of the outbursting Jupiter family comet 17P/Holmes on 2007 October 26–29, achieving a spatial resolution of 2.5, or∼3000 km at the comet distance. The observations resulted in detections of the rotational lines CO 3–2, HCN 4–3, HCN 4–3, CS 7–6, H2CO 31,2-21,1, H2S 22,0–21,1, and multiple CH3OH lines, along with the associated d...

Background and purpose Many efforts have been made to use chemical components as weapons throughout history until the Germans first employed chlorine gas cylinders in April 1915 at Ypres Belgium against French and Canadian soldiers. Leaving 5,000 dead and 15,000 injured, it was the first practical application of chemical agents. The Geneva Protocol in June 1925, which was an attempt to pre...
متن کاملCyanogen Metabolism in Cassava Roots: Impact on Protein Synthesis and Root Development
Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz), a staple crop for millions of sub-Saharan Africans, contains high levels of cyanogenic glycosides which protect it against herbivory. However, cyanogens have also been proposed to play a role in nitrogen transport from leaves to roots. Consistent with this hypothesis, analyses of the distribution and activities of enzymes involved in cyanide metabolism provid...
